TENNIS EXHIBITION
Seoul, South Korea

November 20, 2007
Federer Wins First of Three Exhibitions Against Sampras

Pete Sampras and Roger Federer ATP World No. 1 Roger Federer won the first of three exhibition matches over American Pete Sampras 6-4, 6-3 in Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday.
The pair will now travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for a second clash on Thursday, before playing again in Macau, China, two days later.

Sampras fired two aces in his first service game to bring the crowd to their feet at the Olympic Tennis Arena in Seoul. He went on to break the Federer serve to move into a 4-2 lead courtesy of a delicate drop shot.

“I feel pretty good,” said 36-year-old Sampras after the game. “I made it competitive, which was my goal. Obviously Roger is the best player in the world and I retired five years ago. I am grateful that he invited me.”

The trademark service action and solid volleys were on display, but the 14-time Grand Slam champion was slower around the court and made a number of unforced errors that Federer capitalized on to take the first set.
Pete Sampras Federer, who captured his fourth Tennis Masters Cup title on Sunday, took control of the second set with a minimum of fuss.

“Pete was one of my idols growing up and it's great to play him,” Federer said. “It wasn't easy for me, it wasn't easy for him as he's been retired five years. I am number one and everyone expects me to win.”

Sampras won his final competitive match over Andre Agassi in the US Open final in September 2002. The American, who finished year-end World No. 1 six straight years between 1993-1998, officially retired one year later.

Federer and Sampras met only once at Wimbledon in 2001. Federer won the fourth round match 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5.

Sampras Stuns Federer in Macau in Final Exhibition

Pete Sampras and Roger Federer Pete Sampras turned the tables on Roger Federer in the third and final match of their Asian exhibition series in Macau on Saturday, stunning the ATP World No. 1 7-6(8), 6-4.

Sampras, who holds the record for six consecutive year-end No. 1 finishes, did not face a break point en route to the win, which followed straight-sets losses to Federer in Seoul and Kuala Lumpur. But the seven-time Wimbledon champion was keeping the victory in perspective, saying "Let's not get carried away," as he dismissed talk of a comeback.

Federer, who on Monday will celebrate a record 200 consecutive weeks as ATP World No. 1, said: "It's been tough beating my idol the last two times. I'm happy that he got me at least once. I hope we can do it again in the future. I'd like to get him back."

WTA Tour - Sharapova to play exhibition Reply with quote
  #7
Former world number one Maria Sharapova will make her debut in Singapore next month when she takes on compatriot Anna Chakvetadze in an exhibition match.

Sharapova, who has won two grand slam titles, will play the world number six on December 30 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, organisers have revealed.

The 20-year-old was runner-up in the season-ending WTA tour championship in Madrid after making a top-five finish in the tour rankings for the fourth consecutive year.

The match will be a repeat of this year's Australian Open quarter-finals, when Sharapova beat Chakvetadze in straight sets en-route to the final, where she lost to Serena Williams.

Chakvetadze later reached the semi-finals of this year's US Open in New York.

Maria Sharapova v Ana Chakvetadze EXHIB Reply with quote

WTA Tour - Sharapova downs Chakvetadze

Eurosport - Sun, 30 Dec 19:47:00 2007

Former world number one Maria Sharapova has opened her season with a 6-0 7-6 win over Anna Chakvetadze in an exhibition match in Singapore.

The beaten Australian Open finalist in 2007, Sharapova raced through the opening set against her compatriot with blistering serves and clean winners from the baseline.

Although Chakvetadze made the second set a more tightly contested affair, Sharapova eventually prevailed 12-10 in the breaker.

"I think I did a pretty good job," the world number five said.

Sharapova now joins world number three Ana Ivanovic, reining Wimbledon champion Venus Williams and Chakvetadze in the JB Group Classic in Hong Kong before heading to Melbourne Park and the new Pexicushion surface for the first Grand Slam of the year, starting on January 14.

"I'm going to take every single match seriously because it is like I said, my only preparation for the Australian Open," Sharapova continued.

"I heard it's going to be a faster surface [in Melbourne] and I also heard that it's not going to be as sticky which is going to be beneficial for all players especially in extreme heat. The court gets very sticky and a lot of injuries can occur.

"So yes, I am very excited about [the Australian Open]."
