Osaka 2007 - Sotherton and Ennis chase Kluft
Eurosport - Sat, 25 Aug 18:17:00 2007
Great Britain duo Kelly Sotherton and Jessica Ennis head into the final day of the heptathlon at the World Championships confident they can remain in the fight for a medal after posting impressive performances at the midway point in Osaka
Birchfield Harrier Sotherton and Sheffield's Ennis both posted personal bests in the 100 metre hurdles and 200m to sit third and fourth respectively behind defending champion Carolina Kluft and Ukraine's Lyudmila Blonska with three events remaining.
Ennis, who led after the first hurdles, suffered a nightmare performance in the shot putt to slip down the table but stormed back to end the day on a high in the 200m and is 47 points behind her team-mate, who is a further 25 adrift of second-placed Blonska.
Despite a strong showing from the British contingent, Kluft posted personal bests in the hurdles and high jump, while also recording season bests in the shot putt and 200m to remain on course for a third consecutive World Championship crown after producing a champion's display at the Nagai Stadium.
"It feels good, it is a lot better than I have done all year," said Sotherton, who was disappointed not to break the 4000 point mark after four events.
"Every performance was consistent and I know that I can carry that on to Sunday which means I know I can win a medal so anything less than that is a disappointment.
After twice setting a personal best in the shot, Sotherton heads into the second day in third place and also with a much-needed confidence boost for the javelin which has robbed the 30-year-old of several medals in the past.
Ennis sat second behind Kluft after a 12.97secs display in the hurdles and a clearance of 1.89m in the high jump, but slipped down to sixth after managing just 11.93m in the shot putt, one of her weakest events.
But the 21-year-old City of Sheffield athlete re-grouped and stormed to victory ahead of Kluft and Sotherton in the 200m to remain on course to equal or better the 6399 total she posted in Poland earlier this year.
"It was a good day. To start it that way with the hurdles was brilliant, then the high jump was a solid performance and then the shot putt was an absolute disaster,' she said.
In the men's 100m Great Britain sprint trio Marlon Devonish, Mark Lewis-Francis and Craig Pickering completed a satisfactory day's work as all three secured places in Sunday's semi-finals.
Devonish, who produced a personal best 10.06secs in Sheffield in July, followed up his 10.13secs showing in the first round with an identical performance to finish second behind a strolling Tyson Gay.
Lewis-Francis produced a season's best 10.17secs, while Pickering was the slowest of the British trio at 10.21secs.
Joint world record holder Asafa Powell also advanced with a reserved display, which still saw the Jamaican clock 10.01secs.
Triple-jumper Phillips Idowu made a solid return from a two-month lay-off to ease into Monday's final with a solitary jump of 17.07m.
The jump was well short of his season best of 17.35m posted in Oslo, but the 28-year-old Belgrave Harrier was delighted with his first jump since suffering a recurrence of a back injury in last month's trials in Manchester

Osaka 2007 - View from the track
Eurosport - Sat, 25 Aug 18:56:00 2007
Get all the latest reaction from the world championships in Osaka after the opening day of action!
American 100m favourite Tyson Gay after winning quarter-final heat: "I tried to run 10.2 or 10.3 but I couldn't run that slow. It's the fastest track I've ever run on."
Briton Marlon Devonish after finishing second in heat to Gay: "I'm in the shape of my life and I'm a championship performer. I plan to get into the final and go hell for leather
Sweden's defending champion Carolina Kluft leading heptathlon after four events: "My day was fine, thank you... I am very satisfied with my first day. I didn't have any problems with the weather. Just got to keep it going tomorrow."
British heptatlhete Kelly Sotherton in third: "It feels good, it is a lot better than I have done all year. Every performance was consistent and I know that I can carry that on to Sunday which means I know I can win a medal so anything less than that is a disappointment."
Sotherton's compatriot Jessica Ennis, in fourth: "It was a good day. To start it that way with the hurdles was brilliant, then the high jump was a solid performance and then the shot putt was an absolute disaster. I tensed up and tried to throw it too hard with my upper body and not really using my legs and it was just awful. I was a bit down after that but I knew I had to run a good 200m. But it is the heptathlon and you have to get over a bad event and focus on the next event and that is exactly what I did. I am absolutely delighted with a PB in the 200, I knew I had to run hard and it was pure determination to make up for the shot."
Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba after winning a second straight 10,000m world title: ""I almost quit the race but because I was representing my country, I hung in there. That was the hardest race of my life. I had terrible stomach pain and then I was so far back I thought it would be impossible to come back. But I did it for my country. I was struggling but I told myself to hang in. I didn't want to let down the people back home in Ethiopia. I bumped into my team mate (Mestawet) Tufa. She fell and I didn't see her so I almost went down too. It was the biggest accomplishment of my career to fight back and win."
Briton Jo Pavey after just missing out on 10,000m medal in major championship debut: "I just couldn't hold on. It's disappointing not to get a medal but it's better than it being a total disaster. I've got to be pleased in some ways but it is so frustrating."
Reese Hoffa praising team-mate and silver medalist Adam Nelson after winning shot put: "Adam showed me the ropes. For many years he kicked my butt in practice to make sure I was physically and mentally ready. The tradition goes on. I think it's because in the United States, even just to make the team, you really have to earn your way there."
Adam Nellson on Hoffa's performance: "Reese flat out beat me tonight, 22.04 in a major championship is an unbelievable accomplishment."
Britain's European indoor world champion Phillips Idowu finishing first in triple jump group: "I was really relaxed and I could have opened out a bit more. But if I can jump like that, the way I did, I am confident that when I am under more pressure I can go further. The main job was to come here and make sure I am in the final and I have done that."

Turkish GP - Massa denies Hamilton pole
Eurosport - Sat, 25 Aug 18:31:00 2007
Felipe Massa denied Lewis Hamilton pole position for the Turkish Grand Prix by the tiniest of margins with a stunning lap right at the end of qualifying.
Championship leader Hamilton thought he had done enough to secure his second straight pole as he snatched the top spot from the Brazilian with his final flying lap.
But Ferrari driver Massa, 26, had a surprise in store as he stormed around in 1:27.329 to steal his fifth pole of the season and the eighth of his career 0.034 seconds, ironically exactly one year since he claimed his first at the same circuit.
"Qualifying was very tight," said Massa. "You could see that every single Q1, Q2, Q3 was always a big fight between all four drivers, and in the last one, I managed to put together a great lap and I'm very proud, especially after a very bad result in Hungary.
"I think we deserve it. I'm very proud about the lap, about the team's job and it's very good to start on pole position here, especially as the race tomorrow will be very tough, so it's always a good start."
Massa's Finnish team-mate Kimi Raikkonen had held the top spot until the final minute, but messed up the final corner of his last attempt, meaning he slipped to third on the grid.
That left him one place ahead of world champion Fernando Alonso in Hamilton's sister McLaren.
Alonso, who is celebrating his 100th Grand Prix this weekend, had gone fastest overall in the Q2 but elected to fit hard Bridgestone tyres for his final effort. It affected his qualifying speed but could pay off in terms of race strategy.
The BMW Sauber team locked out row three with Robert Kubica ahead of Nick Heidfeld.
Seventh was Heikki Kovalainen's Renault, one place ahead of Nico Rosberg's Williams while Jarno Trulli's Toyota and Giancarlo Fisichella's Renault completed the top ten.
Britain's Anthony Davidson equalled his career-best grid spot in 11th, but the Super Aguri driver was cruelly denied a place in the top ten in the final seconds of Q2 when first Rosberg and then Trulli demoted him.
David Coulthard will start 13th in his Red Bull with Jenson Button 15th for Honda, but the biggest disappointment came from Ralf Schumacher, who was only 18th fastest in his Toyota after being third on Friday.

sad news about asafa powell though (well, sad news according to me): again he couldn't afford to be the first to cross the line in a big final...he "lost" the 100m final to tyson gay and derrick atkins
