Chambers set for rugby league debut
Eurosport - Mon, 31 Mar 16:27:00 2008
Dwain Chambers has a "good chance" of making his rugby league debut against St Helens on Sunday, according to Castleford coach Terry Matterson.
The controversial sprinter has never played either code of rugby but reported in at Super League's bottom club on Monday to begin a month's trial and was told he could be in the team to face the Challenge Cup holders at The Jungle.
Chambers looked visibly shocked when told the news at a press conference, but the Tigers have the smallest squad in Super League and lost Mark Leafa and Kirk Dixon to injury in Sunday's 50-4 defeat at Bradford.
"He's probably 50-50 at the moment," said Matterson. "We're busted. We only had 17 players yesterday and lost two more to injury so you do the sums.
"I would say his chances of playing in the first grade are high. We have a gym session tomorrow and he can lead the way in that.
"Because of the situation we're in, we won't be doing much contact work this week."
Chambers admitted at the press conference that he knew little about rugby league and had to be prompted by his solicitor Nick Collins when asked how many players made up a team.
"It's a long shot but you never know," said Matterson.
"The club can't lose anything by this. If he does make it, it will bring people through the gates."
Chambers, who returned to athletics earlier this year after completing a two-year ban for using the designer steroid THG, will be registered with the Rugby Football League to enable him to play at the weekend.
Castleford football director Michael Robinson revealed the club began talking to Chambers about 10 weeks ago after they had been tipped off about his interest in trying his hand at rugby league.
Robinson revealed Chambers would not be paid for the month he was on trial, which he insisted the club was taking seriously.
"It was never mentioned as a publicity stunt," he said. "It was made clear from day one there is no money changing hands between Dwain and the club in the first month."
The 29-year-old Chambers insisted a legal challenge to his lifetime Olympic ban - imposed the British Olympic Association - is "likely" and that he is positive over his chances of being able to compete in Beijing.
"We remain optimistic," he said. "We can't afford negative thoughts.
"There will be a decision on that in the next couple of weeks if we want to go forward with a legal case."
Collins said: "It's always been a very realistic aim we will be going there.
"There's been some very encouraging comments from people outside the BOA saying they have no problem with Dwain.
"We wouldn't take it (an appeal) on if we didn't think there would be a reasonable chance of success. It's likely."
Chambers insisted that, although the Olympics remains his priority, he felt he had to explore other options should his appeal fail.
"I would like to get to Beijing - I'm getting on and am 30 on Saturday, and this may be my last chance," added the sprinter, who revealed he would be taking advice from rugby league legend Martin Offiah.
"But I am here to learn and see if I can grasp a different sport.
"I'm going to take it one day at a time and instead of running in a straight line I will be running left and right.
"I'm optimistic about what I can achieve. I'm competitive at heart and want to go out and do the best I can.
"I won't know until I actually get out there and participate in training and get a feel for what I'm getting myself into.
"It's the same attitude I had last year with the NFL, that I stood a strong chance of getting hurt, and I actually did. I ended up getting a stress fracture but that was towards the latter part of the season.
"I'm a tough nut. I'm willing to go out and try it and do the best I can. It is a risk but I'm pretty open-minded. I'm just going to have some fun and learn the ropes."

Kubica wins Bahrain pole
Eurosport - Sat, 05 Apr 14:28:00 2008
BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica took the first pole position of his Formula One career in Bahrain on Saturday.
The Polish driver pipped Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa for the top spot at Sakhir with a final flying lap of one minute 33.096 seconds.
Brazilian Massa won from pole position in Bahrain last year but is still without a point after two races.
Australian Mark Webber was third quickest for Renault-powered Red Bull, ahead of Toyota's Italian Jarno Trulli.
McLaren's 23-year-old championship leader Lewis Hamilton - who was forced to use a spare chassis after a heavy crash on Friday - was third fastest.
Hamilton will share the second row in Sunday's race with Ferrari's world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
Briton Hamilton leads Raikkonen by three points in the championship.

UEFA Cup - Rangers broken-hearted as Zenit win
|
#254 |
Igor Denisov's 72nd-minute goal proved the difference as Zenit St Petersburg ground out a 2-0 victory over Rangers in a predictably tight UEFA Cup final at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Denisov slotted home with 18 minutes to go to break the hearts of Walter Smith's men and the estimated 100,000 fans they brought down from Glasgow to Manchester.
Rangers were predictably cagey game until the hour mark as the Dick Advocaat's men struggled to find a way through the blue wall, but Zenit took advantage of the increasing space to grab the winner that makes them only the second Russian club to lift the trophy.
Contrary to all the pre-match hype, the match enjoyed an open start and both sides had early chances; first Andrei Arshavin shot the wrong side of the near after he was released down the left channel, before Jean Claude Darchville opted to cross rather than shoot, Radek Shirl intercepting on his own six-yard line.
After their early chance, Rangers settled back as Zenit mounted some pressure on their goal, the Scots finding it difficult to maintain any decent possession as the Russian side harried and pressed in midfield.
But despite all their possession in the Rangers half, Zenit were unable to create any decent shooting opportunities as the blue wall did its job on the edge of the box, although the Russians were disappointed not to be awarded a penalty moments before the break when Andrei Arshavin's cross hit the arm of Kirk Broadfoot.
Rangers were convinced they should have had a penalty of their own ten minutes into the second half. Darchville's first-time shot on the turn brought a fine save out of Vyacheslav Malafeev, and when Barry Ferguson pounced in on the rebound the ball bounced up and struck a Zenit arm - although the referee ruled the defender knew nothing about it.
As Rangers finally began to commit a few more players forward, Zenit also began to look more threatening and the Russians came within a whisker of taking the lead just after the hour-mark.
Alexander made a rash decision to come out of his goal as Arshavin chased a long punt upfield, and the signs looked good when the striker just nicked the ball away from the keeper - however, his chip goalwards from 20 yards was headed off the line by the retreating Sasa Papac.
However, the chance seemed to spark some renewed belief in Zenit and after a spell of pressure, they finally made the breakthrough with 18 minutes remaining.
Rangers were caught on the hop after they surrendered possession from their own throw just inside their half; the ever dangerous Arshavin got on the ball and ran at the heart of the Rangers defence before slipping a fine pass through to the run of Denisov, who finished calmly past Alexander.
Rangers boss Walter smith quickly sacrificed a defender for substitute striker Nacho Novo, although Zenit had an immediate chance to double the lead moments later, midfielder Konstatin Zurianov screwing a shot wide after a low cross found its way through to him at the far post.

Be honest, haven't we all waited for THIS:
Beltran Fails Doping Test
Spanish rider Manuel Beltran has tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance EPO during the Tour de France, according to French sports daily L'Equipe.
The newspaper said on its website that Beltran's A sample tested positive following the first stage of the Tour last Saturday. Beltran finished the stage 25th. He finished Friday's stage in 26th place, three minutes 20 seconds behind leader Kim Kirchen.
If confirmed, Beltran would be the first rider to fail a doping test during this year's Tour.
Earlier on Friday, the French anti-doping agency reported that tests conducted prior to the start of the Tour returned no positives tests but a few abnormalities.

Well, but some great news as well! She did it again, and with a blast:
Isinbayeva breaks own record in Rome
Russia's world and Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva set a world record of 5.03 metres at Rome's Golden Gala.
The 26-year-old cleared the bar with ease to surpass the record of 5.01 she set at the 2005 Helsinki world championships.
Her nearest rival on Friday was Poland's Monica Pyrek, who vaulted 4.75.
Olympic and world champion Jeremy Wariner edged LaShawn Merritt to win the 400 metres and strike a blow against his American rival ahead of next month's Beijing Games.
Wariner had a big lead in the final straight but had to hold off a strong late surge from Merritt to win in 44.36, just a hundredth of a second ahead of the 22-year-old.
Wariner gained revenge after losing to Merritt at the U.S. Olympic trials last week and at the Berlin Golden League meeting in June although his dominance of the event clearly remain under threat.
"I got out good, better than at the trials and in Berlin," Wariner said. "I knew he'd be there at the end. I had to stay relaxed and hang in there. I've got to work hard and cut out the mistakes from here on in."
Merritt was not too disappointed about the defeat.
"I did what I had to do and I feel good," he said. "I lost by one tick. You run this sort of race to get the problems out and be ready for the main ones."
Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell's Olympic preparations suffered a setback when he pulled up with a groin strain at the end of his 100 metres heat although his manager told reporters that the problem was not serious.
Portugal's Francis Obikwelu beat Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas on a photo decision in the 100m final after both athletes finished with a time of 10.04.
Kenyan teenager Pamela Jelimo stayed on course for the Golden League jackpot by beating world champion Janeth Jepkosgei in the 800 metres.
Jelimo, 18, clocked 1:55.69 to beat fellow Kenyan Jepkosgei by over three seconds and claim the third of the six series wins needed for a share of the $1 million prize.
Croatia's Blanka Vlasic is the only other person still in with a chance of the big prize after she won the women's high jump with a leap of two metres.
Cuban 110 meters hurdles world record holder Dayron Robles, who last month ran 12.87 seconds to beat the previous mark set by Chinese Olympic champion Liu Xiang, blew away the field in his event with a 13.08 run.
Panama's Irving Saladino, the world long jump champion, leapt 8.3m to top the field in his comeback from a knee injury.
Finland's javelin world champion Tero Pitkamaki, who accidentally speared French long jumper Salim Sdiri here last year, triumphed too with a 87.7-metre throw.
Allyson Felix, the twice 200m world champion, cruised to victory in the women's 400m race with a time of 50.25.
The next Golden League meeting is in Paris on July 18.
