Eurosport - Thu, 23 Aug 14:14:00 2007
Former world champion Eunice Barber has withdrawn from the heptathlon in Osaka as she has failed to recover from injury in time.
Barber, who took silver behind Carolina Kluft both in Paris in 2003 and in Helsinki in 2005, was considered to be one of the greatest challenges to the Swede's bid to win a third straight title.
But the Frenchwoman has struggled with injury for much of the season and has withdrawn from the tiring multi-event in order to concentrate on reclaiming the long jump title she won in 2003.
"Eunice remains careful after sensing discomfort over the past weeks but remains confident for the long jump," the French Federation said.
But despite Barber's absence Kluft says she still believes the competition will be tough despite being unbeaten in major championships for the past five years.
"My training has been good and I feel like I am ready to compete," Kluft said. "I don't think about [the humid weather] that much. It's sunshine. It's worse to be in the rain.
"[Barber] is a great athlete and we always pushed each other. But for me it doesn't matter. I focus on my own competition. There are still a lot of good athletes out there."
As well as winning her third gold medal at the World Championships, Kluft will be attempting to improve her personal best of 7001 points, but denies she is planning an assault on Jackie Joyner-Kersee's world record of 7291 points.
"It is a really good record and it is nothing that I think of," Kluft said. "I never have that in my mind because I am not sure I have the ability to break it.
"I would not end my career being disappointed because I was chasing a record I might never get. Jackie Joyner-Kersee was a great athlete. It is a great record and she will keep that forever."
i can t believe this news i was hoping her to go for gold !!!
oh, this is sad news...well, i am always hoping for carolina kluft to get the gold medal...but now there isn't any competition anymore for her, it will be a boring heptathlon this time

Do you like Formula 1.. I always watch the Races.. an this weekend it will be in Turkey..
Practice One - first blood to Ferrari in Turkey
Kimi Raikkonen stamped his authority on proceedings as practice got underway this morning in Istanbul Park. The Finn was the pacesetter throughout the hour-and-a-half session, eventually working his way down to a best of 1m 27.988s, which compares with Ferrari team mate Felipe Massa’s 1m 26.907s pole last year. The Brazilian was second fastest, 0.403s behind on 1m 28.391s.
And then there was a gap of almost a second to the McLarens. Lewis Hamilton was third right up until the end on 1m 29.361s, when Fernando Alonso took the place with 1m 29.222s. Food for thought for the silver arrows team after a day spent yesterday trying to effect a bond between their warring drivers, but nothing to get too excited about at this early stage.
It was a bit of a wild session, with lots of drivers having off-track moments on the ‘green’ surface: Raikkonen, Massa, Giancarlo Fisichella, Heikki Kovalainen, Sebastian Vettel and Adrian Sutil. And Sakon Yamamoto, Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher, Mark Webber and David Coulthard all spun. In Coulthard’s case it is likely to have been an oil leak that caused his Red Bull to snap away from him in Turn 5 right at the end as flames licked around its rear end. Marshals quickly doused them, but the RB3 will take a bit of cleaning up before this afternoon’s session.
Kovalainen was the ‘best of the rest’ for Renault, taking fifth place on 1m 29.346s to head Williams’ Nico Rosberg (1m 29.403s), Schumacher (1m 29.414s) in the Toyota, Fisichella (1m 29.541s) in the second Renault, Nick Heidfeld (1m 29.641s) for BMW Sauber, Trulli (1m 29.685s) for Toyota and Robert Kubica (1m 29.710s) in the second BMW.
Anthony Davidson headed the next group with 1m 30.384s for Super Aguri, chased by Coulthard (1m 30.398s), Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello in the Hondas (1m 30.483s and 1m 30.580s respectively), Tonio Liuzzi (1m 30.612s) for Toro Rosso, Takuma Sato (1m 30.624s) in the sister Super Aguri, Williams’ Alex Wurz (1m 30.876s) and Webber (1m 30.917s) for Red Bull.
At the back, Vettel was 20th on 1m 31.383s for Toro Rosso, ahead of the Spyker duo with Sutil on 1m 31.445s and Yamamoto on 1m 32.270s

Osaka 2007 - Isinbayeva: No one can beat me
Eurosport - Fri, 24 Aug 09:55:00 2007
Russian world pole vault record holder Yelena Isinbayeva says that she is unbeatable ahead of the world championships in Osaka.
"I know if I do my best, it is impossible for somebody to beat me," the Olympic and world champion said.
"There's no chance for anybody," she added. "Sorry, it's like this."
She is so big a favourite in the 11th world championships which begin on Saturday, that she professes no concern for the competition.
"I don't care about my rivals," she said. "More important and more dangerous is myself."
The former gymnast has not lost a final this year, going 11 for 11. In three years, she has been beaten only three times in 42 competitions. Twice the losses came because she no-heighted. The other loss was on a countback.
In meets where she has cleared a height, no one has jumped higher since July 4, 2004.
Twenty times she has set a world record with 11 of them coming outdoors.
Her ambition is to raise the bar to 5.16 or 5.20 metres and beat former Ukranian Sergei Bubka's string of 35 men's pole vault records.
But her record machine has slowed in recent years. Not since the Helsinki world championships, when she cleared 5.01 metres, has she raised the bar.
The reason, in part, has been the lack of competition, she said.
Sometimes she may wait two to three hours to begin vaulting while competitors fall by the side.
"That is more difficult," she said, "but pole vault is still my passion."

Marathon gets worlds off to early start
Fri 24 Aug, 10:08 AM
The 11th world championships get off to an early start on Saturday morning when 94 marathon runners take to the streets of Osaka hoping to avoid the worst of the sweltering heat.
In the absence of injured double defending champion Jaouad Gharib, local success could well be on the cards in the opening event of the nine-day championships.
Gharib's fellow Moroccan Abderrahim Goumri is favourite for gold but Japan has a rich tradition of marathon running and the likes of Toshinari Suwa, Tsuyoshi Ogata and Wataru Okutani will be keen to impress.
Tirunesh Dibaba, who became the first woman to win the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the same world championship in Helsinki two years ago, gets her attempt to repeat the feat at the longer distance in the evening session.
Mestawet Tufa has the best time of the year with 31:00.27 and is likely to be the biggest threat to her fellow Ethiopian's attempt to become the first woman to successfully defend the 10,000 world title.
Defending champion Adam Nelson is one of two Americans targeting the third gold on offer on the opening day, the men's shot put.
His compatriot and world indoor champion Reese Hoffa is the man in form with his best of the year 22.43 metres, while Dutchman Rutger Smith will hope to improve on his silver from Helsinki.
Tyson Gay, the fastest man this year, will be looking to make his mark on the men's 100 metres when he run in the opening heat. World record holder Asafa Powell goes in the sixth heat.

Osaka 2007 - Britons predict Gay heroics
Eurosport - Fri, 24 Aug 14:30:00 2007
Speaking exclusively to eurosport.yahoo.com ahead of the Osaka World Championships, British sprint duo Jason Gardener and Abi Oyepitan predict a 100 metres world record for Tyson Gay.
who will win the men's 100m in Osaka?
Abi Oyepitan: I actually think Tyson Gay is going to take the gold. I watched Asafa Powell in Oslo and he was totally unconvincing. He looked like he was running full pelt and it was 10.0-something. That was his last race coming into the World Championships so he's probably not feeling confident at all. He's had injury problems and in the major championships he has not produced and won the medals so I think Tyson has got the upper hand.
Jason Gardener: I'm with Abi. I think that Tyson's season has gone very well. he's run a lot faster than Asafa so he's on a high. He was nearly beaten in Oslo and doesn't seem to be his usual self. He's not produced it when it really matters, like in 2004 when he breezed through the rounds, looked totally convincing and like he was going to destroy everybody and finished fifth.
AO: Early in the season I'm sure he wanted to come out and stamp his mark. He didn't do that and with Tyson running [a world record-beating wind-assisted] 9.76, he is full of confidence.
JG: Knowing Asafa Powell and having watched him destroy fields, running sub-10 seconds as easily as he has done in the past, I think he is harbouring some injuries. Things seem to be going much better for Tyson Gay; but who knows when you get there?
AO: If they can battle with each other, they can break the world record. It's a fast track: warm, great conditions for sprinters, so it's going to be a fantastic race.
JG: The Japanese, with the technology and being so innovative, they've produced a track for fast times and for sprinters as they did in 1991 in Tokyo. Let's hope there is a legal wind behind them to help them out. There are some other athletes too who will want to spoil the fun. Derrick Atkins has run well this year, Francis Obikwelu is a championship performer: he gets better with more runs. Francis is a class act.
How will Britons Marlon Devonish and Craig Pickering fare?
AO: Marlon's running really well: if it's a fast track and he gets into the final, you never know what could happen.
JG: Marlon's run a lot quicker than Craig already this year. He is the biggest performer. He's the British number one and very experienced. Craig Pickering is a great prospect. I'm hoping he can come back with a season's best, maybe a 10.08 or more; he'll maybe make the final if it all works well for him. I suspect that this year the other athletes are not as strong as they have been. On the lower levels, when you take Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay out of the way, it is all pretty much of a muchness.
AO: I think that Marlon is capable of running under 10. In the last couple of races he's been tired, with back-to-back running; he didn't run well at Crystal Palace but come the championships, anything can happen.
JG: I'm a man who knows what it takes to run under ten seconds. There's a huge difference between 9.99 and 10.05 when you're on your limits. I ran 9.98, the only time did it : the number of times I ran 10.01, 10.02, 10.03, so close but so far - it is difficult. But he is in the right environment: it is a good track, good weather.
Devonish is 31 and peaking late in his career. Why is this?
JG: I think Marlon has got a lot more confident. He's medalled in a lot of champs, he's experienced, he's enjoying his athletics; he's not got many stresses and he is an Olympic champion [Athens 2004 4x100m relay]. With that comes confidence. He's trained hard under Tony [Lester's] regime. He trained for only two weeks with Francis [Obikwelu] so that is not what has made the massive difference.
AO: I trained with Marlon Devonish and Tony Lester, who he has trained with for 10 years, is world class. Training with a champion like Francis gives you a new lease of life: you might pick up new things and it is different environment from what you are used to. When you are with the same coach for many years you can get a bit stale.
JG: With Marlon Devonish his best event has always been the 200 metres, which he has focused upon, so he's been able to run the 100m for fun. When there isn't that pressure on your shoulders with people expecting you to be great, you tend to run better. It is interesting now because there is pressure on Marlon Devonish to perform as a 100 metre runner. I have no doubt that he can perform.
AO: I personally think he should have done the 200m as well: that is what he trained for. I think he could easily have broken his PB, which is 20.19. Running that 100 will definitely improve his 200m, and It's a shame he isn't doing both.
JG: it depends on his training. If he is prepared for both events and he has the physical condition to do it, he should. He says he is focused on the 100m; but the 200 comes after that so he can focus on the first one then run the 200. I think the Federation probably put pressure on him because they want a fresh Marlon Devonish for relay as well.
