U.S. Open - Henin faces Serena quarter-final
Eurosport - Thu, 23 Aug 10:52:00 2007
Top seed Justine Henin will begin her US Open campaign against a qualifier but could face eighth seed Serena Williams in the quarter-finals - as she did at the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

Henin will open against a qualifier in the year's final Grand Slam tennis tournament, which starts in New York on Monday, with Russia's Olga Poutchkova or another qualifier awaiting in round two.

Japan's Ai Sugiyama, Germany's Julia Schruff or yet another qualifier will face the Belgian star should she advance to the third round.

Henin, 25, has won six titles this year, including the 35th of her career on Sunday in Toronto. She lost last year's US Open final to Maria Sharapova but won her sixth career Slam in May at the French Open, her fourth Roland Garros title.

American eighth seed Serena Williams, who won the Australian Open but lost to Henin in the French Open and Wimbledon quarter-finals, could face Henin again in the US Open quarter-finals.

Wimbledon winner Venus Williams is a potential semi-final foe for her sister or Henin, the draw ending the chances of a repeat of the all-Williams US Open finals won by Venus in 2001 and Serena in 2002, the last year either made the final here.

U.S. Open - Henin strolls in last 16

Eurosport - Fri, 31 Aug 17:25:00 2007

Top seed Justine Henin hardly had to break a sweat in her US Open third round clash with Ekaterina Makarova, as she strolled to a 6-2 6-0 victory in just 50 minutes.

US Open scorecentre

It what was a complete mismatch, the Belgian overwhelmed her Russian opponent and dropped just eight points on her way to taking the first set 6-0 in just 18 minutes.

Makarova is five inches taller than Henin, but it was the world number one who exhibited all the overwhelming power, as she kept the points short with booming ground strokes that Makarova couldn't cope with it.

The young Russian was also clearly suffering from nerves, ranked 156 in the world, this was the biggest match of her career so far, and by the time she finally settled into the match, the contest was long over.

She lost the first three games of the second set before she finally managed to hold serve to make it 3-1.

Two quick games for Henin then followed though, but a scrappy game when serving for the match helped Makarova take an unlikely break.

The Russian qualifier then showed good guts in the final game, saving three match points, the third of which was salvaged with a delightful drop-shot.

However, on match point number four Henin finally claimed the win as Makarova double-faulted, and the Belgian will now face Dinara Safina in the next round.

15th seed Safina booked her passage into the last 16 with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Ahsha Rolle of America

Justine -vs- V.Williams Live From New York

It's the champions league semi-final in New York City when Justine takes on Venus Williams on Friday September 7. This will be their first career meeting since January 23, 2003 in the quartefinals at the Australian Open.

"I'm sure a lot of players don't like to play against me. But I have a lot of respect for everyone. I start to trust myself much more than in the past because it hasn't been luck for me. It's just I proved so many things. And I don't have anything to prove except enjoy my tennis on the court and try to stay healthy and enjoy every moment of it. I'm really proud of what I did this year. It's not over yet. But it's been great 'cause I came back from a very tough situation personally. It was tough to come back professionally and just do my best, and that's what I did. So I enjoy being out there. I'm in confidence." - JUSTINE

U.S. Open - Henin wins seventh slam

Eurosport - Sun, 09 Sep 13:43:00 2007

Justine Henin claimed her seventh grand slam title with a 6-1 6-3 victory over former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova at the US Open.
TENNIS 2007 U.S. Open Justine Henin trophy

The Belgian world number one needed just one hour and 22 minutes to take the comprehensive win and move above Venus Williams to second in the list of active grand slam winners.

She also becomes the first woman to ever to beat both Venus and Serena Williams en route to winning a grand slam crown and the first to win the tournament without dropping a set since Serena did it in 2002.

"It's such a great feeling," Henin said after the match, which was a replay of the 2006 French Open final won by the Belgian. "I had two amazing weeks and played my best tennis."

Henin, who won the title in 2003, broke the fourth seeded Russian in the very first game of the match and was never threatened after that.

Thanks to some play from the baseline the 25-year-old Belgian broke again in the third game and it wasn't until the fifth that Kuznetsova finally won a game by holding serve.

After blazing through a love-service game in the sixth, Henin completed the 6-1 opening set in just 33 minutes breaking the 2004 champion for a third time as Kuznetsova fired a backhand error into the net - one of 29 unforced errors for the 22-year-old Russian.

The second set started slightly better for Kuznetsova, who pressed the diminutive Beglian a bit more in Henin's first service game and then took her own opening service game to love.

But then at 2-1 in the second, Henin struck again as the error-prone Kuznetsova was made to save three break points before surrendering the critical break of serve on the Belgian's fourth chance.

Kuznetsova missed a golden opportunity to break back in the next game hitting repeated errors on back-to-back break points, and then watching as Henin fired home a nervy ace and a big overhead smash at the net to hold serve.

The two woman held comfortably in the next three games, setting up a dramatic ninth game.

Serving for the set at 5-3 Henin opened up with an ace, but then hit back-to-back double faults after a highly audible jeer was heard from the crowd in between serves.

Kuznetsova then pressed Henin, who lost last year's final at Flushing Meadows to another Russian Maria Sharapova, to a double break point.

The Belgian saved the first with an emphatic ace and then outlasted Kuznetsova in the second after a long baseline rally bullying the Russian into an error.

Another double fault handed Kuznetsova, who will be the new world number two when Monday's WTA rankings are released, yet another chance to break.

But when the fourth seed failed this time with a horribly mis-hit forehand, the conclusion seemed set in stone.

Henin pressed Kuznetsova into yet another error to get to championship point and then made the gutsy decision to serve-and-volley before beating the Russian with another drop-volley at the net to earn her second grand slam title of the year on top of her French Open win in June.

"She played an unbelievable tournament and an unbelievable game today," Kuznetsova said.

"I hope to be back with better game in the final next time."

ustine Cancels Beijing Visit
12/09/2007: FROM JUSTINE'S OS.

It was an enormous North American tour climax this fortnight at the US OPEN in New York. The reactions from supporters and fans were incredible, Justine says thank you for the great messages posted in her guestbook.

Justine has been suffering for a few months now with respiratory problems and diagnosed with chronic asthma. During the US OPEN she again had breathing problems. After a medical examination in Belgium upon return, Justine has been advised by her physicians to recover and rest. She will not be able to visit and play the China Open in Beijing which begins next week.

When Justine is given the greenlight by her doctors, she will train gradually in Monaco. If all goes well her revised tour schedule will be Filderstadt, Zurich and Madrid.

Federer and Henin handed ITF gongs

Eurosport - Mon, 17 Dec 14:53:00 2007

World number ones Roger Federer and Justine Henin were named the 2007 ITF World Champions by the International Tennis Federation.

Federer, who won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles to bring his Grand Slam haul to 12, took the award for the fourth year running, while Henin, who won the French and US Open titles was named for the third time overall.

The 26-year-old Federer, who also won the season-ending Masters title in Shanghai, said: "It is an honour to be named ITF World Champion for the fourth year running.

"Each year brings new challenges, and I am proud that I have been able to raise the level of my game when needed. It gives me great satisfaction to have won another three Grand Slam titles and maintained the number one ranking."

Henin becomes Women's World Champion for the second year running, having also received the honour in 2003.

The 25-year-old Belgian also followed her Grand Slam triumphs with a win in the season-ending WTA Championships in Madrid.

"This has definitely been the best season of my career so far and I am delighted to be named ITF World Champion once again," Henin said.

"It has been a very challenging year overall, but I have stayed positive and proved that nothing is impossible if you work hard. I still think my best tennis is yet to come."

ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti commented: "Roger Federer and Justine Henin both enjoyed outstanding seasons to maintain their status as the world's number one players.

"In particular their record in Grand Slam events saw them emerge as the clear choices for ITF World Champions."

The ITF also announced that American twins Bob and Mike Bryan (USA), and the Zimbabwe/US pairing on Cara Black and Liezel Huber were the 2007 ITF Doubles World Champions.

The Bryans are men's Doubles World Champions for a record fifth successive year.

The pairing won a career-high 11 titles during 2007, including the Australian Open, and were runners-up at Wimbledon.

They were also unbeaten for the US team that won the Davis Cup for the first time since 1995.

Black and Huber are women's Doubles Champions for the first time in their first complete season together.

The duo won nine events during the year, including two Grand Slam titles, the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and the season-ending championships.

Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania and Urszula Radwanska of Poland were named as 2007 ITF Junior World Champions.

WTA Tour - Henin 27 not-out in Sydney

World number one Justine Henin stretched her winning streak to 27 matches as she beat fourth-ranked Ana Ivanovic to set up a one-versus-two final with Svetlana Kuznetsova at the Sydney International.

Henin claimed her 56th WTA Tour final appearance
with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over the 20-year-old Serb.

Kuznetsova overcame unseeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova in the other semi-final, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4).

It is the first time since February 2006 in Antwerp that the two top ranked players have met in a WTA final.

"She's (Svetlana) a good friend. I like her a lot. She's been very consistent in the last few years and she has a very heavy game," Henin said of her closest ranking rival.

"She's pretty aggressive, takes her opportunities, so I know it's going to be a tough match."

Kuznetsova trails Henin 15-2 in career match-ups, but is unperturbed by the disparity.

"We've had a few very close matches and I've won twice. She's number one so that's good. I have opportunities to beat her," Kuznetsova said. "She's going to be the favourite and that's fine with me.

"I just have to work on my game to try to improve so maybe one day I can be where she is," she added.

The Belgian is chasing her third win in the Sydney tournament, having won the title here against Amelie Mauresmo in 2004 and Francesca Schiavone in 2006.

Henin overcame Ivanovic despite a faltering 47 percent serve which conceded 11 double-faults and was broken three times.

But just as Henin looked in danger when Ivanovic levelled at a set all, she broke the young Serb in the third game of the final set when she netted an attempted backhand pass.

"At the beginning of the second set I lost my intensity and concentration, at this level if you give a little they take a lot, so in the third set I worked more on my attitude," Henin said.

"I was positive, a little bit more aggressive, came to the net more and I served better so was much better in the third set."

Henin surged to victory from there as Ivanovic struggled and netted with a backhand on match point. She now leads Ivanovic 4-0 in career meetings.

Henin went into the final on the back of just one match against Estonia's Kaia Kanepi after a bye and a walkover against Lucie Safarova in the opening rounds of the tournament.

"It was important to get this close match before the Australian Open, that's what I really need now and I'm glad I'm in the final tomorrow so that gives me a perfect preparation for the Open," she said.

Ivanovic was pleased to have three close three-set matches to prepare her for the year's first Grand Slam.

"I was really happy that for almost the whole match except the last game I managed to keep my level," Ivanovic said.

"I didn't have many up and downs like I did in the previous matches, so that's something positive after all the hard work in the off-season."

Battling Henin looks to recapture form in Berlin Reply with quote
  #60
BERLIN (AFP) - World number one Justine Henin admitted she is using the German Open to recover her flagging form ahead of next month's French Open after she suffered a heavy defeat by Serena Williams earlier this year.

Henin, 25, has picked up two WTA titles this year, but after bowing out early at the Australian Open in January, she was hammered 6-2, 6-0 at the quarter-finals of the Miami tournament in March by eventual champion Williams.

It was the heaviest defeat for a reigning world number one since Martina Hingis lost to Jelena Dokic by the same score at Wimbledon in 1999.

Henin then withdrew from last month's Charleston tournament with a knee injury and this is her first tour event back ahead of Roland Garros which starts on May 26.

And with seven Grand Slam titles to her name - including four at the French Open - the Belgian has high plans in Berlin.

"I have really needed these last few weeks off to get my form back and to make tennis my priority again," said the Belgian, who has a bye into the second round where she will play Yung-Jan Chan from Chinese Taipei.

"If I can get my confidence back anywhere, then it will be here.

"I have won this tournament three times, I am feeling confident and motivated and I am here with high hopes.

"It is such an important tournament to do well so close to the French Open."

Henin says she is looking forward to the Berlin tournament to recapture her focus, but gave a clear indication she is planning for her eventual retirement.

"It's very hard to find a balance between the sport and your personal life, it is possible, but it is not easy, especially for those people around you," she said.

"I am making plans for the future, but I would like to go back and finish my high school qualifications and do other things like ski and travel once when I retire.

"I don't know what is going to happen in my career, but it is important to make plans.

"Things aren't the same as when I was 20, the body doesn't recover as quickly and it's all part of growing up.

"I'd like to play on for another two, three, maybe four years.

"But it is impossible to say how long I will play on for, you never know what is going to happen."
